Untitled for now . . .

This is in response to the WordPress Daily Prompt: Ready, Set, Done. I actually cheated a little bit. The first two paragraphs were already written before I saw the prompt, but the rest of it fall into the 10 minute guideline. I did some editing, but there’s still more to do and the story isn’t anywhere finished.

Constructive criticism is always welcome.

It was all that I we had left to remember her by. A multifunctional tool, used to swat the flies that insisted on lingering around the hut, a duster for when the dirt, dust, and sand spilled in from the hillside, and a disciplinarian stick to us children in line. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less.

I’m the oldest. The woman of the house now and I have to take care of the little ones. Well, there not so little. William is a year younger than me, 19, but he still acts like he’s the baby or rather he still wants to be treated like the baby. And he was for most of his 19 years, until mom had Clara and Tanya. They’ll be eight in a few weeks. Read More…

Day 16: NaBloPoMo — Inside the Blogger’s Studio w/ My Mom

I wanted to get this up yesterday, but unfortunately my dear old mother took her time getting me her answers. I went with the Inside the Actor’s Studio’s questions from an earlier Daily Post, because I was curious how she would answer.  Some surprised me.

Blogger’s Studio

. . . so here are her answers from today’s Daily Post.

  1. What is your favorite word?
I don’t just have one, but for now I’ll go with Love.  Not to be cliche, but we really do need more of it and compassion too.
  2. What is your least favorite word?
N**ger. Growing up when I did it was used quite regularly and I hate it when I hear people use it.
  3. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
I like to people watch and imagine what they’re saying or what their gestures mean and I’ll come up with a story based on that.
  4. What turns you off?
    Bafoonery.
  5. What is your favorite curse word?
Shit. I just like the way it rolls off my tongue.  You can draw it out.  Like you start shhh (like your shushing somebody) then you end with -it.  Shhh-it.  Or you can say it very fast and staccato like.
  6. What sound or noise do you love?
    Ocean Sounds
  7. What sound or noise do you hate?
Yelling.  (As her child, I found this answer rather interesting because she is a yeller.)
  8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Astronomer.  I’ve wondered what was beyond the stars and never believed that we were or are the only ones out there or here. So, I wanted to find out what out there.
  9. What profession would you not like to do?
Not sure about this.  I’ve worked a lot of jobs over the years.  Some I enjoyed a great deal others I haven’t, but you do what you need to do in order to make ends meet.I would have to say any job from that television show Dirty Jobs.  Disgusting.
  10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
I would probably say “Holy Shit!” While He shook his head.  But I would love to hear Him say,”Even though I threw a lot at you you handled it well and kept the faith.  Thank you for being a faithful servant.

Day 12: NaBloPoMo — Inside the Blogger’s Studio w/ Me

Not sure this can rightly be called Actor’s Studio, so I’m going to go with  . . . dun dun dun dun

Blogger’s Studio

. . . so here are my answers from today’s Daily Post.

  1. What is your favorite word?
    Dumb-Ass
  2. What is your least favorite word?
I can’t.  Bugs the hell out of me, especially when you haven’t even tried.
  3. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
A lot of things: Stupidity (only because some of that crap you can’t make up); people watching; my own crazy warped imagination
  4. What turns you off?
A lot of things, but Stupidity definitely tops the list.  Yes, it’s on what turns me on and what turns me off.  The reason being is that there is so much to go around and inspire food for fodder and great laugh out loud moments as well as the ones that get your blood boiling.
  5. What is your favorite curse word? Read More…

My Name Is . . .

Write about your first name: Are you named after someone or something? Are there any stories or associations attached to it? If you had the choice, would you rename yourself?

Obviously my mother knew what she was doing when she named me Erica.  There really isn’t much to why she decided on Erica other than the year I was born “All My Children” made its infamous debut and good ole Erica Kane entered households.  My mom thought it was a good strong name and she liked the ring of it.  But I’m definitely not the drama queen Erica Kane was.

Well my name truly fits my personality when you go back and look at its meaning.  It’s pronounced AIR-a-ka and is Old Norse name meaning noble, alone, ruler, forever strong.  It is the feminine of the Scandanavian Eric.

I am typically a loner, which I definitely enjoy and I’m definitely bossy — hence the ruler definition and my mom has often said I am perhaps one of the strongest people she knows.  When I was an infant I almost died a couple of times as a result of severe asthma attacks.  I was in a car accident and technically should have been a goner, but came out with only minor cuts and a broken leg.  I’ve been knocked down and have gotten back up, dusted myself off, and got back in the fight.  I don’t take ‘no’ for an answer.  Watch out there now.

Another personality trait that folks have put on us Erica’s is that we’re quick-tempered.  I can only speak for myself.  I am not slow to anger.  I can go from 0 to Pissed Off in about .2 seconds.  Belive it not my temper has gotten better.  It’s kinda like the Incredible Hulk — you don’t want to make me angry.  You won’t like me when I’m angry. But there is always one person who has to test it out.

I used to want to change it to Bobbie or Alexandra (Alex), but it’s grown on me over the years.

Not While I’m Alive

For today’s WP Daily Prompt, I though about creating a character and writing a story, but decided against it.  Maybe later down the road I’ll write a story featuring one or more of these places.

Is there a place in the world you never want to visit? Where, and why not?

  • The Morgue — It’s just something very eerie about a morgue that just doesn’t sit right with me.  Yes part of it is that it’s inundated with dead people in a giant refrigerator and in drawers
  • A Cemetery — Cemeteries are very beautiful places and look extremely peaceful, but I have to tell you Michael Jackson’s Thriller video ruined it for me
  • A Funeral Home — It’s not that this place just reminds me of taxidermist for people.  That alone would probably be alright, but it’s the workers that give me the heebie jeebies.  They speak in such a solemn and monotone voice and have these weird and awkward smiles on their faces.  I can’t help but think their fitting me for a casket
  • Jail — I have absolutely no desire to be Big Bertha’s cell mate and I have a really hard time with authority.  I’m the boss of me and having someone else be the boss of me would not go over very well.  Also that I’m in a little cell with a little window and not to mention surrounded by women all day.  That in of itself would drive me to drink, if I could have alcohol.
  • Antarctica — Why would I want to go there.  It’s an ice abyss and it’s just to damn cold
  • The Sahara Desert or Death Valley — To frackin hot during the day and to frackin cold at night. I’m a cool 65°–75° kinda gal with no humidity

What I Long For

Alright today I decided to tackle two challenges in one post.  The Daily Post Prompt: Places and the Trifecta weekend challenge of writing a piece using: 1) only 33 words and 2) it had to be in first person.  So here it or rather they are.  Enjoy! 😀

****

I never yearned for writing our names in the sand or skiing or camping as long as she was here.  Now she’s gone — that’s all I long for, and her at my side.
